  • This is a metal kit of a Class B, 30-40 Ton Shay Locomotive. While not based on any particular prototype, the kit contains enough detailed parts to create your own version of a wood, coal, or oil-fired locomotive. This kit contains brass photo-etched details, pre-assembled Micro-Trains 902 Couplers, and Fox Valley 28" metal wheels (for the front truck). --- Our own proprietary 6.5 mm power truck is available for this Shay kit here on our website.

Read an interview by John Cubbin with Walter over at Raildig about this Shay.

We had a customer question and so I'm including it here for your information. He wanted to know the minimum curve radius required for operating this shay. We asked one of our experts and this was his reply: Our local Nn3 modular club recommends a minimum radius of 11" (280mm). My test track includes 195mm (7-5/8") radius Rokuhan curves. The loco will probably run on tighter than that, but tighter curves than that should not be necessary. It also depends on whether or not the builder includes drive shafts. I do, and size them to work on 195mm curves.

This Nn3 locomotive is also featured in two articles in N Scale Magazine July/August 2015 and Jan/Feb 2016. These articles (The Short & Nn3arrow) are authored by Thomas Knapp and features many colorful photos of a step by step build and of installation of a DCC decoder and a DC version. • A tiny but great little engine
I'm addicted to Shay locomotives ever since. My model collection features Shays from Hon30 up to 1:7.2 livesteam on 5"-gauge. Now I'm proud to add the tiniest Shay, make my collection start from Nn3. The kit comes well packed and I was astonished by the detail and quality of the cast pewter parts. With some little filing and sanding, the parts fit together very well and the main body is a quick assembly. Even so the model is already high detailed, there's enough space to add your own touch and design.
